Wellesley High baseball team clinches first league title since 1986
Senior Danny Rosenberg hurled 3 2/3 innings of one-hit scoreless relief as the Wellesley High baseball team blanked Walpole, 3-0, on Wedneday afternoon to clinch its first league title since 1986, and secure a spot in the Division 2 South Sectional tournament.
The Raiders (10-9) captured the Bay State Conference's Herget Division crown with a 10-5 mark. Wellesley won the Bay State League (prior to the formation of the Herget and Carey Divisions) in 1986. when current Raider assistant Drew Kelton was a player on the team.
In Wednesday's win, Chris Mele went 2 for 4 at the plate to lift his average to .413, among the top five averages in the BSC. Matt Rubin added two hits, including a double, and knocked in two runs. Rosenberg struck out three in picking up his sixth win of the year. Mike Wald fired 5 1/3 scoreless innings, fanning five.
Wellesley hosts Medfield in the regular-season finale Friday (May 22) afternoon at 3:45. The state tournament pairings will be released on Tuesday.
