Portfolio manager apologizes for Logan confrontation

A portrait of Greer -- and her mug shot.
By Shelley Murphy, Globe Staff
A Wellesley businesswoman apologized to a State Police sergeant today and agreed to perform 200 hours of community service to resolve charges that she nearly ran him down with her Mercedes Benz SUV during a confrontation at Logan International Airport in March.
Margaret Greer, a 57-year-old portfolio manager and former Wellesley school board member, admitted during a hearing in East Boston District Court that there were sufficient facts to find her guilty of two misdemeanor charges of assault and battery on a police officer and failure to stop for a police officer.
"She wanted to get this behind her and she deeply regretted that this situation had ever occurred,'' said Boston attorney Carol Starkey, who represents Greer and was at her side in the court. "It has been enormously difficult and traumatizing to her.''
Greer was picking up her husband at the airport March 29 when a trooper ordered her to move because her Mercedes was obstructing a bus lane, and she refused, according to a police report. (See previous coverage.)
Sergeant Daniel Wildgrube was writing Greer a ticket when she gunned her engine and sped off, hitting him with her car's side mirror and forcing him to leap out of the way, according to his report. Wildgrube said he caught up to Greer, who was stuck in traffic, and ordered her to get out of the car because she was under arrest, but she again refused.
Wildgrube said he stood in front of Greer's car with his hands on the hood and she continued to drive while he ran backwards for about 15 feet. Greer left the airport and was stopped minutes later by troopers on the Massachusetts Turnpike.
After Greer admitted today that there were sufficient facts to find her guilty of the two charges, prosecutors dropped a third charge of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (her car), which is a felony.
East Boston District Court Judge Roberto Ronquillo Jr. continued the case without a finding and ordered Greer to write a letter of apology to Wildgrube, perform community service, and remain on probation for six months. If Greer completes those conditions and doesn't get into trouble while on probation, the case against her will be dismissed in six months.
Jake Wark, a spokesman for Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley, said, "Her actions that day were dangerous and irresponsible and it is important she be held to account for them.''
But he added that Greer's decision to resolve the case quickly and apologize "suggests a degree of remorse and responsibility that we don't often see so soon after arraignment.''
David Procopio, a State Police spokesman, said that Wildgrube didn't want to comment, but agreed with the resolution of the case. Procopio said Wildgrube could have been seriously injured and the State Police were pleased that Greer "acknowledged that the facts of the case affirm the State Police version of events.''
After the hearing, Greer personally apologized to Wildgrube and shook his hand, according to her lawyer.
Starkey described Greer as a Harvard University graduate and well-respected member of her community, who has held high-powered jobs and created programs to teach young women about finances.
She said she hopes Greer's accomplishments aren't overshadowed by the mistake she made at the airport.
"No one was injured, no property was damaged and no one was harmed, except Margaret, who paid an enormous price for her mistake,'' Starkey said.

I find it hard to believe that the felony charge would have been dropped if I had pulled the same stunt as this woman....
"She wanted to get this behind her and she deeply regretted that this situation had ever occurred,'' said Boston attorney Carol Starkey, who represents Greer and was at her side in the court. "It has been enormously difficult and traumatizing to her.'
Yeah, going to jail would do that to a person.
What part of "stop" didn't she understand?
Yeah, of course she did--she threatened a state trooper with a deadly weapon and doesn't want to do a month or three months in jail.
She's getting a "special deal" because she's rich and connected.
ugh, hypocrisy at it's best.... give me a break...
If she were a poor person from East Boston she would serve time for this. Is she getting off because she is rich, or because someone took a bribe?
Any information on where the 200 hours of community service will be done? Wellesley Garden Club? Better be an organization that is helping people a lot less privileged than this guilty party.
When the second cruiser stopped her, was she not given a breathalizer test? I wonder how the average teenager from the city would have fared had they done the same thing?
The case was continued and will be dismissed after 6 months of probation? What a joke! There is no justice.
MAYBE this means that he cop WAS being uber aggressive and this is a fair balance? 5 weeks of community service.
"No one was injured, no property was damaged and no one was harmed, except Margaret, who paid an enormous price for her mistake,'' Starkey said
Mistake? Yeah, right.
"paid an enormous price"? Ummm, nope. No she didn't
Twice assaulting an officer and you get off with community service? Un-freaking-believable.
Wow. Way to set a good precedence: If you went to Harvard and deal with money, you can run over a cop and get away with a slap on the wrist.
I'm not saying the woman was right in running from the law but there's something fishy with the cop's side of story too.. The cop had to be standing towards the front of the car if he is to be "almost hit by her mirror." When was the last time a cop stood in FRONT of your mirror while writing you a ticket? I think they are taught to stand slightly behind you so if you make a funny move or go to turn around they can shoot you and they can see in the car at all times.
I think what really happened was she started to take off and the officer grabbed at the car/mirror then had an excuse to make it worse on her.. which I think is a little bit untruthful and shady from someone that must be held above the law... Did anyone look into the service record of the police officer in question?
As someone who takes the bus to and from Logan frequently - I say throw the book at everyone for standing in the bus lane. There should be an automatic ticketing system for bus lane violations, like they have at red lights in certain states.
Buses come around every couple minutes, but many people have the nerve to park in the bus stops, sometimes even double-parked... forcing weary travelers to traverse idling cars and lanes of stop-and-go traffic just to board the bus.
Folks, there is a cell phone lot. USE IT. Yes, it isn't 20 feet away, but it is 3 minutes away and you'll stay comfy in your car the whole while. And it keeps the lanes clear for everyone.
Must be nice to be rich, white, and well connected. Some people think that they are entitled to special treatment and I guess they are. Hopefully Logan Airport will correct this problem by making a "rich and well connected only" lane at the airport so people like Ms. Greer are not inconvenienced by waiting and following the rules like the rest of us slobs.
This makes me sick
A slap on the risk for assault and battery on a police office, and classified as a misdemeanor. I never new assaulting a cop is a misdemeanor, I guess only if your rich and from Wellesley.
Wasn't there alcohol involved as well? You know the saying. Money talks, #### walks.
You call this justice? What would it have taken? Shame on the judge and the DA for letting this happen. I was really hoping she'd get jail time for this. And the case is dismissed after 6 months of keeping her nose clean?? Give me a break!!!
I can't help but wonder if someone from Roxbury did the same thing, would they be given 6 months probation and community service? What a disgrace!
If she were a 17 year old inner city black kid, she would be doing time (if she were lucky) for this.
Instead, she is a "Do you know who I am" rich middle-aged Wellesley woman, who certainly should have known better and she bought her way out of time.
No justice.
Its fair, i know cop a logan. He said both the cop and the lady were out of line. If it went to trial, she would have probably walked.
This, ladies and gentlemen, is "justish". It kind of looks like justice, and even sounds a little like justice but if you take a second look you will clearly see that there is actually no justice. If this justish weren't so sickeningly inappropriate given the crimes committed it would be magnificent, if only for the sheer disregard for the rule of law and the flaunting of privilege on display here.
We should all be throwing up a little in our collective mouths. Disgusting.
Probation, huh - and community service - and, gee, an apology for assaulting a police officer; resisting arresting and on and on and on.
Why isn't she going to Cedar Junction and bustin' rocks????
Sheesh...
East Boston District Court Judge Roberto Ronquillo Jr - what's t he story on this guy? Does anyone know his background? This is an appalling decision? Is this judge a problem??
Her attitude reflects her status as the driver of a big, expensive SUV. What arrogance! When we get chased for stopping at Logan, we apologize and quietly move on. She felt entitled. She should have spent some time in the slammer for an attitude adjustment.
This is INSANE! She's not going to jail for this?! I am in utter shock and disbelief. That is clearly felony assault with a deadly weapon.
What about the charge of having and open container of alcohol in the car??? was that dropped or was it never even brought up. The orignal article mentions that she had a slight odor of alcohol and refused a breathalizer (ok, that one could be hard to prove in a court room) but what about the fact that they found a glass with alcohol in her car??? I'll bet she's connected to either a Judge or politician that got the squashed for her.
This is unacceptable! What is wrong with this world? Punish her!
The original report stated that the police observed an open alcoholic beverage in her car, when she was arrested, but she was not administered any field sobriety or breathalyzer test; that pertinent "fact" was dropped from all subsequent reporting...
Even though I'm a member of her white, professional demographic, I think that the public interests were NOT properly served by this plea-bargain. If a person of color, driving a BMW (rather than a Mercedes) had committed the same actions, they likely would have been shot while fleeing the police! Her poor judgement & belligerence were most likely alcohol-induced (IMO) and she'll now feel smug about how she's smarter than all the rest of us -- possibly with future deadly consequences!
The assaulted officer & those assisting in her arrest arresting should be commended for their restraint at the time of the original incident, but they never should have allowed this snake to slither away, later on...
What was the "enormous price" Margaret paid for her mistake? Her legal bills?
What about her giving false information regarding her whereabouts during the second stop? And the "red glassy eyes and strong odor of alcohol" described in the original arrest report? Her license apparently was not suspended. This sounds like a "fix" to me.
Several commenters on the original article predicted this outcome. Looks like they were right. Then again, she does have to keep her nose clean for six months. This may not be easy for some one who has demonstrated such poor impulse control.
So....the moral of the story is if you are from Wellesley and pull a stunt like this an apology is all that is necessary and all is forgiven. Can you just imagine if this was a person from East Boston, Revere, Mattapan....get the drift?
And lesson learned is what exactly? People from wealthy towns with money can pretty much get away with bad behavior and will continue to behave badly. Grrr!
aahhh 6 months probation. It helps to live in Wellesley and have a good lawyer.
Anyone who drives into Logan to drop someone off or pick them up knows that there is definitely another side to this story. The misbehavior of the state police there is notorious and even talked about around the country by other travelers. I've personally witnessed all sorts of things that cops simply do not get away with outside the airport --- from simple verbal abuse of people to outright abuse of authority. They're the cops and they seem to get away with anything they want over there. You really have to watch yourself. Not saying that this woman wasn't being too smart or patient, but I seriously doubt the accuracy of "almost running over the cop." My guess is that the judge and DA knew that was a shaky case too. It's amusing that the Logan state police barracks is designated...wait for it...."F Troop." No excuse for the woman;that was stupid, dangerous behavior on her part and she deserved what happened to her. But Logan seems to be a field lab for running a police state.
Outrageous! Justice is not blind to $. Although it wouldn't make sense to send this woman to jail, she should have been fined $10,000, and the conviction should be recorded permanently.
She was arrogant right after this happened- looked for support against the State Police on a blog. She is Injured? She paid off someone! And she will continue this behavior- She got off!
This is a perfect Globe Spotlight!!!
In the halls of justice, the justice is in the halls. First time offender. Apologized and made nice with the court and the cop. Keeps her nose clean for six months and she is home free. Hopefully she learned her lesson, if not, the charges can always be reinstated. This may not be perfect justice but it's reasonable justice. Everybody should get one pass and have the opportunity to show that they learned to walk the straight and narrow as long as nobody got hurt and no serious property damage resulted. The prisons and jails are too full as it is.
Shame on you Dan Conley
I drive to Logan often. And I travel to/from many other airports throughout the US. Simply put, all state police at Logan are super aggressive and extremely arrogant. Many times they "manufacture" situations like this. Along with Ms. Greer doing community service, the judge should have ordered sageant Wildgrube to attend counseling and communications training. You do not see this type of police aggressiveness and arrogance at any other airport in the country.
it's mindboggling that not a SINGLE person acknowledges the one and only reason this crazy lunatic got off scott-free from this potentially deadly encounter that SHE ann SHE alone caused. that is, that SHE is a WOMAN. if ANY man, of any color or age had done the same thing, he'd be in prison right now. the fact that she's rich and white has NOTHING to do with it, but what's scarier is how conditioned this society is by feminists such that men are terrified to even consider, let alone write the truth of this situation and the many thousands of others like it where women do horrific crimes, or instigate them, but get ZERO punishment. such hypocrisy.
If your truly upset, call your State Rep @ 617-722-2000, Judge's name is East Boston District Court Judge Roberto Ronquillo Jr. This state is corrupt.
poor people go to jail...rich people go to court....america 101
Trying to hit a police officer with your car to avoid arrest is NOT a "mistake."
This is simply outrageous. The Boston Globe needs to do a serious investigation into how some people are allowed to assault a police officer and get off with what amounts to a reprimand. Let's see the video of the incident. Let's see transcripts of what happened. Let's see who is friends with whom to allow some people to be above the law and others not.
I cannot believe they are completely letting her off the hook. Why do we even have a law enforcement system if we're just going to let people do whatever they want without consequence?
I guess if you're from Wellesley you just get a slap on the wrist. She will be doing her community service work at the "see you next Tuesday" club!
I don't agree with 70% of you people. The cops at logan are overly controlling, mean, pushy and totally cold to people that need to meet passengers for pickup. Many times I have sat for only 30 seconds to have a police officer come up to my window and pound on it to "get going." For a city and state that depends so much on visitors for business and pleasure this simplly has to stop. These cops simply go too far. While I cannot support what she specifically did, I am 100% confident that the police officer was intimidating her and screaming that she leave. Boston, time to grow up.
This woman got off way too easy - she should receive a much more severe punishment for her behavior. I live in Wellesley, and feel that this woman's behavior gives people from our town a bad name.
Disgusting, simply disgusting.
I quote King from the movie Platoon as he and Taylor have drawn latrine detail :
"... the poor are always getting '*bleeped* over' by the rich, always have, always will ..."
"...said Boston attorney Carol Starkey, who represents Greer and was at her side in the court. "It has been enormously difficult and traumatizing to her.''
Traumatizing !!!! To her !!! Maybe she should be hit and dragged by a Merdedes SUV herself.
This woman should be behind bars and stay there for a long, long time
I had the opportunity to work with Sergeant Wildgrube and he is one of the nicest people I have ever known. All of you commenters that think the charges are being dropped because he was at fault are making baseless accusations. The woman DRAGGED him down the road! How can you even think that the officer was being over-aggressive is asinine. The reason the don't let you park at the terminal is because it is a security risk. Don't cry about it. The State Police don't make the laws, the simply enforce them. If you have a problem with laws, call your state reps. If you have a problem with parking in the cell lot, call massport. THE STATE POLICE DO NOT CREATE LAWS!
Think she knows an important person or two? What a joke.
What a joke. Shame on the DA and his office.
Jake Wark, a spokesman for Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley, said, "Her actions that day were dangerous and irresponsible and it is important she be held to account for them.'' But he added that Greer's decision to resolve the case quickly and apologize "suggests a degree of remorse and responsibility that we don't often see so soon after arraignment.''
We "don't often see" it, because in any and all other circumstances, an apology wouldn't be allowed, nevermind accepted. If everyone who "regretted" their crime was let off, then the jails would be empty! Shame on the judge, the law officials and last, but not least, the lawyers involved. It's a disgusting outcome. I am completely disheartened. I wonder if I have ANY CHANCE AT ALL of seeing this treatment duplicated in other up-coming cases. I will be watching!
To all you people that think an urban youth might have to do time for what this woman did THINK AGAIN - cuz they probably would have been shot!
To all you people that think Logan cops are pushy - THAT IS THERE JOB! I don't break the rules when I go to Logan and the cops have always been just fine!
Why can't we just see this for what it is? Cop doing his job, rich b@$%^ doesn't like it, drives away - endangering a cop, cuz she knows she can!
arghhhh - rich people tick me off -
Since when does attempted murder get resolved with an apology? What a joke!
If she were a 17 year old inner city black kid, she would be doing time (if she were lucky) for this.
Give me a break. If she was a 17 year old inner city black kid she would have has a record a mile long and that wouldnt include all the arrest that were thrown out becuase some liberal judge believed the i didnt have enough chocolate chip cookies as a child defense. If one tenth of the so called racism occurred to blacks it would be a good thing. They wouldnt have the audacity to commit as much violent crime as they do.
Yeah this seems like a felony at some level, and yet no felony charge, nice. Good job by her lawyer. A public defender would try to get 'continued without a finding' LoL! Can I live in Wellesley too?
My goodness -- ONLY because they think there is sufficient evidence, they admitted to charges. LOL.
This reaffirms my belief that the self-entitlement crowd eventually will get found out usually when they go up against the wrong person. If she was so important why didn't she have someone pick up her party for her, especially if it is true that she was drinking? How many service people or those lower than her socio-economic status did Ms. Do You Know Who I Am belittle or berate?
She definately got off way too easy. Beware self important people when you stick your you know what out there to show how big and bad it is, you also leave it out there to get kicked.
I say we put the judge at Logan and have her do the same thing to him as she did to the cop and see if he then gives her the same sentence. Sounds like another Judge Lopez!
How does this stuff happen? How does a woman push a cop 15 feet with her CAR and not go to jail?? Answer: graduated from Harvard, lives in Wellesley. How does a guy on the night before his wedding last year get gunned down in a barrage of several dozen shots for just talking back to a cop? Answer: he's Black and lives in the Bronx. We become more like 18th C England and less like the nation our forefathers envisioned by the day. Sickening.
No justice here , shame on you Judge Ronquillo for letting this woman get away with this
I still want to see the surveillance footage. You know they have it - why has that never come to light of day? As the facts stand now, I agree this is xx and not justice, but I would still like to see the video to be sure....
As long as Margaret is not a violent person --- such as murder, rape, and etc etc. What's more she has a clean record. I am impressed that the woman apologized and moves on. Plenty sex offenders are out on the street. Why target this woman? -- Just because Margaret lives in Wellesley area and has a good job and such. Come on ... She makes a mistake and accepts the responsibility of outcome.
Unbelievable, because she's from Wellesley and has money she gets a slap on the wrist. As long as you have money, you can commit practically any crime in this country and get away with it.
Please publish where she will be doing her community service. Then all of us outraged citizens can show up and make her wish she had gone to jail rather than get a cushy community service deal.
The Globe should check in monthly with her parole officer and ensure she is actually performing the community service.
A case of two monster egos meeting their match, and what transpired a result of each person's personal sense of their own power, entitlement, and self-aggrandizement. Hey, it's Massachusetts where everyone scratches and claws at one another to prove that they are better than they are, and where laws are treated as mere "suggestions" for proper behavior! I guarantee this is not the first time these individuals belligerent attitudes have reared their self-absorbed ugly heads-- ask any of their neighbors, co-workers, neighborhood grocery store clerks, probably even spouses, but this circumstance just brought it into widespread public light. Shame on both of them for not being adult and allowing the situation to escalate as far as it did, but more shame on Ms. Greer for not respecting the authority of the police officer regardless of his surliness, and for not taking responsibility for her actions and lying about what transpired, and going on Craig's List an hour after it occurred to solicit witnesses to substantiate her bogus account in some desperate measure to assuage her own guilt!
Hopefully Ms. Greer's community service will involve something which will teach her something about humility.
I remember when the story about the initial incident first broke on Boston.com that most bloggers chimed in with support of Ms. Greer. There were far more posts claiming state police overstepping their bounds and the like. It's funny how public opinion can shift so drastically in such little time. Brings to mind the notion of "mob mentality."
“Nine-tenths of the people on earth were created so you would want to be with the other tenth.”
Horace Walpole
Very simple reasons for her having the book thrown at her and serving jail time for assaulting an officer no matter what her reasons were... She is from Wellesley, she is caucasian and she is wealthy. As much as you don't like it, those are the facts. Did you think she was going to Walpole? Come on now you can't be that naive.
Young black men have been shot for less. Either this is a tragedy, or shooting fleeing young black men is, or both.
Why does every story have to identify the car when it's an expensive one. Can't these writers be creative without stooping to these cliches'. If this woman drove a Toyota Tercel and worked as a cashier at Wendy's, would she be fawned over like this idiot. I know! I know, I keep forgetting how many "Globe" people live in the Metro West area. , I wonder if this piece of crap who was driving the car would have gotten off so lightly if she lived in Chelsea.. Wow- a portfolio manager-how flippin impressive. We should "bail her out" like all the other idiots on Wall St. that have cost the taxpayers a trillion dollars.
"Many times I have sat for only 30 seconds to have a police officer come up to my window and pound on it to "get going." "
That's because it's illegal to park near the terminals for even 1 second.
sometimes I hate my home state, this is absurd.
Things to do in Wellesley
