Stowaway scorpion finds a home at Wellesley College

Wellesley’s traveling scorpion has found a new home at Wellesley College.
The scorpion arrived in town on Sunday, after slipping into a Wellesley family’s suitcase in Italy as they prepared to return home. It stung a woman as she unpacked, but since it is a baby scorpion, it had very little venom and so did not injure the woman badly. She declined medical attention.
Piccolo, as the scorpion has been christened, will live in the lab of animal behaviorist Professor Dave Ellerby.
Ellerby, who studies animal physiology and movement, said that Piccolo is a Euscorpius Italicus, a species common to Southern Europe but not found here.
Ellerby has used scorpions in his Animal Bio-mechanics class before, and may use Piccolo in the future, but said that right now, Piccolo is just visiting.
