Crews in Wellesley will be working all week to clean up fallen trees and branches left behind by Hurricane Sandy. Some side streets are still blocked, said Wellesley Police Lieutenant Marie Cleary, and there are about 250 customers still without power.

Between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. yesterday, she said, police responded to more than 100 storm-related calls.

“Police officers and firefighters just were responding from call to call to call to call,” she said. “Fortunately, I think most people stayed home, so there wasn’t a lot of motor vehicle traffic once the storm and the winds picked up in the afternoon.”

Strong winds knocked down trees and utility poles all over town, in some cases sparking electrical fires and closing main streets.

There were no injuries reported, said Cleary, and though there were several instances where trees fell into homes, none of them caused fires.

During the storm, police advised residents not to go out of their homes unless they absolutely had to, because there were live electrical wires down all around Wellesley and many streets were flooded.

School was cancelled on Tuesday because there is still so much debris in the streets, said Cleary.

Because the ground is so wet, she said, it is possible that more trees could fall today. There could also be sporadic power outages. Police have extra staff on, she said.

The town expects to have the power restored to the town by early to mid- afternoon, said Cleary.
