Two Wellesley women are collecting gifts to send a “holiday sleigh” to Newtown, Conn., in the wake of the deadly school shooting Friday that left 20 first graders and eight adults dead.
“These kids need to know that they’re loved, and they’re safe, and that there are people that won’t hurt them,” said Sue Brady-Hartigan, who, along with Antonia Perry, came up with the “New Friends for Newtown” campaign.
It’s not so much about the toys, she said. It’s about showing the children that the world has more love than violence in it.
“These kids, at this young age, need to know the sense of community and support of people they don’t even know,” she said. “Because this is just what you do.”
Two companies, McCabe Moving and HMS Moving Services, each donated a moving truck, said Brady-Hartigan. The Packaging Store in Needham is donating the boxes.
Donations are being collected at the Wellesley Community Center at 219 Washington St. Gifts should be unwrapped. Gift baskets are welcome.
The deadline for donations is midday on Friday, Dec. 21.
Anyone with questions can email email@example.com or call Brady-Hartigan at 617-462-1335.
“I hope that I have to call McCabe and say, I need another truck,” she said.
