Wellesley seeking runners, charities for 2014 Boston Marathon

Wellesley officials are offering running permits for the 2014 Boston Marathon to qualified individuals who can raise at least $4,000 for charities, and are also seeking nonprofits wishing to receive money raised by runners.

The town possesses several of the coveted Boston Marathon running permits, which it receives from the Boston Athletic Association, the race's organizers. The BAA doles out the permits to communities along the 26.2-mile marathon route as a token of gratitude for their cooperation and coordination.

Runners who apply for the permits can choose to raise a minimum of $4,000 for a nonprofit benefitting Wellesley or can raise funds for a town-specified organization. Runners must also pay the $325 marathon entry fee. The $4,000 minimum must be raised by May 1, 2014.

Officials said Wellesley residents, and charitable organizations benefitting Wellesley locals, will be given preference for the permits. Officials will consider each charity's scope and reach to Wellesley residents when deciding who can receive the funds.

Applications can be found on the town's website, and must be completed and returned to the Board of Selectmen by Nov. 1. The town will notify anyone accepted on or before Nov. 15.
