A forum will be held in West Roxbury tonight for the five candidates running in the special election for the District 6 City Council seat formerly held by John M. Tobin Jr., who resigned in July to take a job at Northeastern University.

The forum will be held at in the Great Room at Sophia Snow Place on Centre Street from 7 to 8:30 p.m. (a change from previous announcements of a 6:30 p.m. start time), according to the evening's moderator and event organizer, Ruth Klepper.

Because the room only seats around 45, she said the audience will consist mainly of residents of the Sophia Snow retirement community, which is located near Roslindale and Jamaica Plain.

Each candidate will have five minutes to introduce themselves, their platform and specifically discuss the state's three ballot questions. Following that will be another two-minute slot for each candidate to respond to one another's opening or add anything they may have missed, Klepper said. That will be followed by a question-and-answer session with those in attendance.

Two candidates are expected to arrive late, Klepper added.

The candidates are Chun-Fai Chan, Kosta Demos, Jim Hennigan, Matt O’Malley and Sean Ryan. Prior to last week’s forum, the five contenders filled out a voter guide questionnaire provided by activist group and forum hosts Jamaica Plain Progressives and each candidate’s responses are available on the group’s website.

The district, which consists of Jamaica Plain, West Roxbury, and parts of Roslindale and Mission Hill, had been represented by Tobin Jr. since 2001.

Preliminary voting on Oct. 19 to narrow the contest to the top two vote recipients is less than two weeks away, while the election takes place on Nov. 16. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. both dates.
