Hedlund pushes for bill to regulate drones in Massachusetts
U.S. Sen. Rand Paul’s 13-hour filibuster of John Brennan’s nomination as CIA director over the Obama administration’s use of drones to target American terror suspects gave state Sen. Robert Hedlund an opening on Thursday to trumpet his own drone concerns.
Hedlund, a Weymouth Republican, wrote to the chairmen of the Joint Committee on Transportation on Thursday asking for a prompt hearing on legislation he filed (S 1664) regulating the use of drones in Massachusetts.
Drafted in collaboration with the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts, Hedlund said his bill would require the approval of “deliberative body” such as a city council to purchase a drone, prohibit drones equipped with weapons, and require those using drones to report on their activity.
“I thought Senator Paul’s filibuster was remarkable. It shined a bright light on the rapid erosion of privacy and civil liberties in America and hopefully energized all those who want to protect the constitution,” Hedlund said in a statement
