'The Cubans were great athletes'
Some 60 senior softball players from Newton, Needham, Wellesley and other communities around Boston have just returned from Cuba where they played a series of exhibition games. Newton project wins energy-efficiency grant
The US Department of Energy has awarded $39 million for four Massachusetts projects aimed at making the electrical grid more efficient and reliable, including an NStar program that will allow Newton residents to reduce their energy use when demand is high. Boston Globe, 12:52 p.m.

Kelly to run Newton-based College Hockey Inc.
Paul Kelly, voted out as head of the NHL Players' Association last summer, has been chosen to run a new initiative aimed at raising the profile of college hockey. The new marketing arm of the NCAA 's Division 1 program, College Hockey Inc., will be based in Newton. Boston Globe AP, 1:04 p.m.
Overnight parking ban kicks in for winter
The city's website is reminding residents and visitors that the annual winter restriction on overnight parking has gone into effect. Until April 15, no vehicle may be left on a city street for more than an hour between 2 and 6 a.m. City of Newton
Frustrated teachers offer a Thanksgiving message
Newton teachers say they contribute to the city beyond what they're paid for, and they told the School Committee so Monday night. The teachers said they contribute more than $37 million a year in unpaid work hours and out-of-pocket expenses and presented the board with faux money bags representing a "Thanksgiving bounty." Thanksgiving countdown
Today I will pick up the turkey, green beans, and the last few miscellaneous items. I will also make all the stuffing and the plain gravy. Tomorrow I will brine and roast the turkey breast, then brine and begin to air-dry the whole turkey. Then I will roast half of the root veggies and cut up the other half. 11/23/09
