Lions dig big win
Newton South’s volleyball team beat Boston Latin, 3-0, last night, behind the defensive effort of Ariel Kaluzhny (22 digs).
“[Boston Latin] has some pretty hard hitters and we knew going in we had to play smart and that there was no room for mistakes,’’ said Lions coach Todd Elwell.
Despite a rough start in the first match, Newton South amped up its defense with senior Tori Bryan (15 digs) and Kaluzhny to take the game, 26-24.
Senior Chloe Jackson jump-served her last two attempts for a 27-25 win in the second game.
The Lions dominated the third game with offensive pressure from Bryan’s 10 kills and five service aces. Rebecca Heller contributed 15 assists.
Case 3, Greater New Bedford 0 - Briana Sousa set a Cardinals record with her 132d block.
Everett 3, Malden 1 - Amanda Desouza had 16 kills, 4 blocks, and 4 aces for the Crimson Tide.
Boys’ soccer Foxborough 1, King Philip 0 - Aidan Hyland scored the winner for the Warriors.
Sharon 4, Stoughton 0 - Mitchell Goldenburg earned his first shutout of the season.
Field hockey Newburyport 1, Rockport 0 - Senior Molly Rowe’s goal proved decisive for the Clippers.
Weston 6, Lincoln-Sudbury 2 - Freshman Katherine Goguen recorded her first hat trick for the Wildcats.
