Brookline powers by Tigers
Case knocks off Holbrook
A heated Bay State Conference rivalry added an extra dimension last night at Babson College: elimination.
In the Division 1 Central/East Sectional final, Brookline defeated Newton North, 3-2, in a match that went five games (17-25, 25-18, 14-25, 25-21, 15-12). It was the third time the teams had met this season - and the third time the match went the limit.
The Warriors (20-2) advanced to a state semifinal Wednesday against South champion Barnstable at Bridgewater-Raynham.
“State champion was going through my head, it was my last year and our last chance to win the title,’’ said Brookline’s Jamie Francona, who played while her father and ex-Red Sox manager Terry, looked on.
Down, 2-1, Brookline was revived in the fourth game by Francona (42 assists) as she fed Lisa Tarasyuk (10 kills) and Midzik (21 kills).
“[Francona’s] an incredible volleyball player. What else is there to say?’’ said Brookline coach Mike Frank. “Everything you could want in a setter is her.’’
Brookline’s attack crumbled in the third game with a swarm of errors.
“We needed to fix our own errors and clean up our stuff,’’ said Frank. “They don’t give you any margin for errors.’’
