Education center gets $10.8m grant

Education Development Center Inc., a Newton nonprofit organization that manages education projects, said it has been awarded $10.8 million from the Office of Head Start at the US Department of Health and Human Services. Boston Globe, 10/8/09

Drops on a penny

Boys in a fifth grade science class at The Fessenden School tried to figure out how many drops of water, Coke, and apple juice would fit on a penny. This experiment was set up to teach the boys about how to conduct and write about a lab experiment. Safe Rides program continues all year

Safe Rides will be a year-long program, according to Nancy Holczer, chairwoman of The Newton Partnership's Safe Rides Task Force. Safe Rides is a free service that allows North or South students to get a ride home to Newton or Boston confidentially from 10:30 p.m. to 3 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights. The Newtonite, 10/2/09

Newton South student is semifinalist for Merit scholarship

A Newton South High student was one of about 25 seniors from Massachusetts high schools who advanced to the semifinals of a national scholarship program recognizing black Americans for earning some of the top scores in the state on the 2008 Preliminary SAT (PSAT), officials announced. Sixteen Newton students are National Merit semifinalists

Sixteen seniors from Newton high schools advanced to a national scholarship's pool of semifinalists, which represents less than 1 percent of US high school seniors, after earning some of the top scores in Massachusetts on the 2008 Preliminary SAT (PSAT), officials announced today. Four Newton South students in National Orchestra

Newton South seniors Taichi Fukumura and Tae-woon Kang, junior Daniel Zhang, and sophomore Eliot Seidman have been selected to participate in the National High School Honors Orchestra out of hundreds who auditioned from across the United States for just 120 spots. Denebola, 9/30/09

High school building to be emptied by July

In preparation for the move to the new Newton North building, the old building must be emptied by July 15, according to Heidi Black, the administrator of high school construction and strategic planning. Strong showing on SATs

Using the most recent SATs as a measure, the communities west of Boston have some of the best public schools in the country. Coming in third statewide was Newton South High, with an average combined score of 1,872 on the test's three sections. Newton North was 17th, with a score of 1,769. Boston Globe, 9/13/09

During the 1950s polio epidemic, schoolchildren lined up for a quick stick in the arm and were sometimes rewarded for their courage at getting vaccinated with a lollipop or extra recess. Boston Globe, 9/10/09

It is often remarked at Boston College that as the University enjoys its rise in national rankings, each incoming class seems to hold even more promise than the last.
