    The very first Shake Shack restaurant in Massachusetts opened Wednesday. Check out scenes from its opening and training preparation.

    The burger chain first started as a hot dog cart in New York City in 2004 and has since expanded to six states and other countries. Since then Shake Shacks, known for their long lines, have developed a devoted following. Fans have been anticipating the Newton-based Shake Shack since it was first announced in 2012.

    This new restaurant is located at 49 Boylston Street along Route 9 in The Street Chestnut Hill shopping center, previously known as Chestnut Hill Shopping Center.

    Customers order at a counter, but the beef is custom-blended, hormone-free, and ground daily; the burgers are cooked to order; and the frozen custard is made on site.

    The food costs more than it would at a place like McDonald’s or Burger King, but it’s not expensive, either. At the original Madison Square Park location, a ShackBurger with American cheese, lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise-based ShackSauce is $4.55.

    Each Shake Shack has its own unique spin on frozen custard mixes, called Concretes. Chestnut Hill’s custom candy addition includes Revere’s Tracks, which includes cheesecake blondies and peanut butter sauce, and Lobstah Shell, which is custard and a lobster tail pastry shell from the North End and strawberry puree.

    Photos of burgers and hot dogs will be posted in the kitchen at Shake Shack in Chestnut Hill.

    “Chestnut Hill is a thriving community with easy access to downtown Boston, Newton, and Brookline, as well as close proximity to Boston College,” said Randy Garutti, Shake Shack CEO. “We’re very excited to be here, and look forward to this Shack becoming a true neighborhood hangout.”

    The menu board at Shake Shack in Chestnut Hill also features treats for dogs, like the Bag O’ Bones from Bocce’s Bakery or a Pooch-ini.

    The Chestnut Hill Shack is constructed with a variety of recycled and sustainable materials— its interior walls are clad in reclaimed wood from an old paper mill at Mount Tom in Holyoke, floor tiles are made from recycled content, tabletops are sourced from reclaimed bowling alley lanes, and wooden chairs and booths are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.
