Weather doesn’t dampen All-Stars at Fenway
The New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association All-Star game was called after three innings at Fenway Park yesterday because of a storm, but it was UMass-Boston’s Drew Tambling who stole the thunder.
The Sterling native, playing for the College Division, drilled a first-pitch fastball from Bryant’s Peter Kelich and wrapped it around the Pesky Pole in right field in the third to account for the only two runs of the game against the University Division.
“It was unreal,’’ said Tambling, a senior outfielder. “My knees were shaking so bad after I hit it that I thought I was going to trip over the bags.’’
Scoring on the blast was Saint Anselm catcher Matt Sucharewicz of Peabody, who laced a single off Kelich to start the third.
With rain on the way, Franklin Pierce coach Jayson King wanted to get more players in the game. But before he could call back the only batter to get two at-bats, Tambling was rounding the bases.
“I couldn’t have asked for a better way to go out in my college jersey than a jack at Fenway Park,’’ said Tambling, a lifelong
Jose Macias, a Franklin Pierce junior, started for the College Division and struck out two in his only inning. He’s expected to be selected in the early rounds during the major league draft, which starts today.
“I couldn’t believe I was pitching on the same mound as Mariano Rivera,’’ said Macias, a Venezuela-born Yankee fan from New York.
Oregon 4, UConn 3 — The Huskies (48-16) came up short in their ninth-inning rally and were eliminated from the Norwich Regional. UConn stranded two runners in the eighth and were denied the potential tying run in the ninth when left fielder Andrew Mendenhall made a leaping catch.
Texas A&M 4, Dartmouth 3 — Kevin Gonzalez led off the ninth with a solo homer, pushing the Aggies past the Big Green (27-19) in an elimination game in Coral Gables, Fla.
