The city Tuesday holds preliminary elections in two municipal races. One is the five-way race for two Municipal Light Commission seats. Competing are incumbent Thomas M. D’Amato, along with William C. Aylward, Brian A. Birmingham, Walter T. Pilkons, and Dennis M. Feld. The other race is for Ward 3 councilor, in which incumbent Rico E. Mello is vying with two challengers: Thomas K. Serino and Steven W. Jennings. Polling hours are 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. The preliminary will reduce the field in the Municipal Light race to four candidates and the field in the Ward 3 councilor race to two candidates for the Nov. 8 city election. Other contests in the November election do not feature enough candidates to require a preliminary election. Among them is a two-way race for the seat of retiring Mayor Michael J. Bonfanti. Competing in that race are Sean Fitzgerald, Bonfanti’s former chief of staff, and Councilor at Large Edward A. Bettencourt Jr.
