Boston College enraged conservative Catholic groups when it announced Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny would speak at its commencement on May 20.
Kenny supported legislation that would permit abortions if there is real and substantial threat to the mother’s life, including suicide. Abortions are illegal in Ireland.
Cardinal Sean P. O’Malley, who usually offers the benediction, boycotted the university’s commencement.
About 40 protesters, including members of Students for Life of America, gathered outside Boston College’s gates before the ceremony to protest Kenny’s appearance.
