Respond Inc., a Somerville-based agency that assists victims of domestic violence, has been named nonprofit of the year by the Somerville Chamber of Commerce. The agency, which works with some 7,000 victims annually, serves victims in communities north and west of Boston. “Respond deserves this award as a community partner who works tirelessly every day to meet the needs of people in our community,” said Mark Alston-Follansbee, director of the Somerville Homeless Coalition. The plaudit, called the Powderhouse Award, has been given out at the business organization’s annual dinner since 1996, and is based on nominations from members. Jessica Brayden, Respond’s executive director, thanked the chamber board for the honor, and pledged continued service to the city and surrounding region. “For 37 years, Respond has served Somerville and its surrounding communities through our mission to end domestic violence,’’ Brayden said. “We have always had the strong support of the Somerville community, both businesses and individuals, and we look forward to continuing our mission in years to come.’’
