Changes abound in Somerville's Union Square
Sand Pit Square
Union Square was known as "Sand Pit Square" because of its clay resources. The clay and sand the pits provided lead to local businesses that specialized in glass and brick production.
The square contains the intersection of three major roads: Washington Street, Bow Street and Somerville Avenue.
The area expanded from its agricultural roots into commercial operations when railroad lines were constructed in the 1800s.
