Changes abound in Somerville's Union Square
Somerville is known as the "City of Hills," and Prospect Hill is the town's most historically important mound.
As Union Square was being developed, families moved near Prospect Hill because of its panoramic views. The area has distinct architectural flourishes with columned porches and stained glass windows on many buildings.
The granite structure atop the hill was dedicated in 1903 in memory of the hill's significance in the Revolution and the Civil War.
