Somerville man pleads not guilty in murder case
A Somerville man has pleaded not guilty to a charge of stabbing his former girlfriend to death and is being held without bail. Antonio Marcos Ferreira, 38, was arraigned on Wednesday in Middlesex Superior Court on a sole count of first-degree murder. Boston Globe, 12/4/09

CAMBRIDGE -- Spring Greeney started eating food out of dumpsters shortly after she graduated from Harvard University. Parking office to hold extended hours

Taking license with temporary plates
Sitting in traffic, I noticed the license plate in front of me: a scrap of cardboard with numbers and letters scribbled in black marker. It reminded me of Stewart Berg, a volunteer historian with the Registry of Motor Vehicles who has collected more than 100,000 old license plates. He told me that when Massachusetts created plates back in 1903, drivers had the option of either buying a plate from the state for $2 or making one. Boston Globe, 11/20/09

Buonomo gets 2 1/2 years in prison

New vehicles en route for police, firefighters

John P. Driscoll Jr., a top lawyer who fought for others
John P. Driscoll Jr. (inset), who rose from his childhood in Somerville as a son of Irish immigrants to the heights of Boston's legal circles, used his life to teach that service meant more than simply achieving public office or personal aggrandizement. Anne Heaton, a singer-songwriter from Somerville (at right), was at a conference in Costa Rica when asked a question that set her on a new and unexpected mission: "What are you going to do to promote peace?" Passionate sense of right, wrong
In 1993, when Michael E. Capuano (inset) was Somerville's mayor, an encounter with unleashed rottweilers getting too close to his son led to angry words backed up with a baseball bat. Now he's a US representative, running for the Senate seat held by the late Edward M. Kennedy as a self-described "fighter" for liberal causes. Delicious organized chaos at Trina's Starlite
Trina's Starlite Lounge is the coolest place in town. It looks like a dive, one of those 1950s roadside spots that you can't see into (though Trina's does have a window on one side). Picking trash contractor always tricky business
Its everyones favorite time of year in Somerville: Time to renegotiate the trash and recycling contract. Last year, the city avoided the fracas by extending its five-year agreement with Somerville-based Fred W. Russell & Sons.
