Somerville man pleads not guilty in murder case

A Somerville man has pleaded not guilty to a charge of stabbing his former girlfriend to death and is being held without bail. Antonio Marcos Ferreira, 38, was arraigned on Wednesday in Middlesex Superior Court on a sole count of first-degree murder. Boston Globe, 12/4/09

Sitting in traffic, I noticed the license plate in front of me: a scrap of cardboard with numbers and letters scribbled in black marker. It reminded me of Stewart Berg, a volunteer historian with the Registry of Motor Vehicles who has collected more than 100,000 old license plates. He told me that when Massachusetts created plates back in 1903, drivers had the option of either buying a plate from the state for $2 or making one. Boston Globe, 11/20/09

Anne Heaton, a singer-songwriter from Somerville (at right), was at a conference in Costa Rica when asked a question that set her on a new and unexpected mission: "What are you going to do to promote peace?" In 1993, when Michael E. Capuano (inset) was Somerville's mayor, an encounter with unleashed rottweilers getting too close to his son led to angry words backed up with a baseball bat. Now he's a US representative, running for the Senate seat held by the late Edward M. Kennedy as a self-described "fighter" for liberal causes.
