George Howell of Acton is regarded as one of the originators of the American craft coffee movement (and inventor of the frappuccino).

In 1975, he put Greater Boston at the forefront of US coffee thinking (and drinking), - where it remained for the next 20 years. Howell began with his first Coffee Connection café in Harvard Square. The chain - which eventually extended to four states - introduced customers to his philosophy of finding exquisite coffees from a single farm, and roasting lightly to bring out indigenous floral, fruit, and spice flavors. Howell’s approach is widely emulated today. By 1994, his 24 cafés were so successful that a new Seattle company called Starbucks bought the whole chain in order to launch an uncontested conquest of the East Coast. Howell continued in the industry as a consultant, roaster, and outspoken commentator, becoming one of the most respected figures in the coffee world. In 2012, he opened up his first coffeehouse in 15 years in Newtonville. In the next 12 months, Howell said he expects to open another in the Greater Boston or Cambridge area.
