On Longwood Avenue, bikers will find bicycle priority lanes. A professor of engineering at Northeastern University, Peter Furth, came up with the idea. He offers an explanation of the new concept by comparing it with priority seating on the T: If there are no bikes, then cars can proceed as usual, but if youre biking then youre entitled to pedal in the middle of the lane, well away from parked cars and in a position that makes it safer to ride.
