Snapshot: State pension earners of $100,000 or more, 2011

The number of retirees in the State Pension Fund collecting annual pensions of $100,000 or more has increased more than 20 percent from a year ago, from 145 people to 176. The State Police have 50 retirees on the list, more than any other department. UMass/Amherst was second, with 42. Tops on the list was Dr. Aaron Lazare, the former chancellor at UMass Medical School, with a pension of more than $240,000. The top three, and four of the top eight, were from UMass Medical. Most state pensions are funded through employee contributions, investment earnings by the pension board, and taxpayer contributions. However, medical school pensions are funded by employee contributions, investment earnings, and a payment from the medical school, according to a spokesman. In 2003, there were 33 retirees collecting $100,000 or more.
