Koppel, Coakley chosen
If you can't wait to see Mike Gordon perform with Phish at Fenway Park on May 31, you can check out the bassist's art tomorrow. The Charles River Museum of Industry & Innovation is opening "Another Side of In," an installation featuring work by Gordon and his mom, Waltham artist Marjorie Minkin. The display is a combo of sculptures by Minkin that emit sounds recorded by Gordon. The music changes based on how close the viewer stands to the sculpture. "She's inspired by the sound," Gordon told us. How trippy. Waltham artist Jamie Robertson, who has done tech work for Disney, helped put it together and added light effects. Gordon told us he's going to try to see the installation, sometime between recording and touring, although the show will be over by the time he plays Fenway. The last time Gordon visited the ballpark was when he saw the Police in 2007. Though Phish wasn't together at the time, he admits he considered what it would be like to reunite and play the park. "I probably thought, 'This would be cool.' " The show is up through May 10.
Theo Epstein was supposed to spend yesterday afternoon at the Mandarin Oriental honoring a few young scholars, but because of the unplanned doubleheader, the GM brought the kids to Fenway instead. On behalf of the Steppingstone Foundation, which helps city youth with education, Epstein honored Mattapan 10-year-old Dakorite Ojuka, Roslindale 12-year-old Christina Giacoppo, and Dorchester 13-year-old Kevin Alves. The trio ate lunch in Epstein's suite while they watched the Sox defeat the Twins. Epstein gave them some signed hats and talked to them about the importance of writing. . . . Also do-gooding in the world of sports this week was Pats owner Robert Kraft, who spent Tuesday mingling with young people at Patriot Place. First, he read to kids at CBS Scene. Later, he honored 36 local high school students who are receiving scholarships from the Pats' charitable foundation. Former Pats linebacker Andre Tippett was on hand to celebrate with the young academics.
Suffolk University has announced its commencement speakers: Ted Koppel and Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley.
Ben Affleck, last seen carrying plywood in Roxbury, tossed a football on Boston Common yesterday as he filmed more scenes for "The Company Men." Word is that Affleck has limited his time on set so he can jet home to hang with the fam. Costar Tommy Lee Jones, who spent Patriots Day filming in Marblehead and schmoozing with local developer Don Chiofaro, stopped by the Charles Square Legal Sea Foods Tuesday night. Jones must like fish - he dined there Sunday, too.
In the swim
In Earth Day news, Christopher Swain is going the distance, yet again. Yesterday the athletic environmental activist, who has taken a number of lengthy swims on behalf of the planet, started a 1,000-mile water trek that began in his hometown of Marblehead. He'll take breaks during the trip to talk to schools about how to save the ocean (and to eat, we assume). The swim ends in Washington, D.C.
