Frightened by the shootout and manhunt that ensued in Watertown Friday, resident Hannah Serbun was hesitant to leave her apartment on Oliver Road.

What she found when she did were sidewalks covered in chalk messages of hope.

“I saw block after block of the street, covered by sidewalk chalk, words and pictures of hope and inspiring strength. I suddenly felt an overwhelming feeling of relief, and was proven that it is in fact true, that hope is stronger than fear,” Serbun said in an email.

Residents expressed their love of Watertown.

Messages were full of gratitude.

People drew flowers and flags.

Some encouraged people to be strong and courageous.

They emphasized that “Love is stronger than fear.”

Messages thanked the Watertown Police Department.

Saying residents had “never been more proud.”

Patriotic sentiments were written on the sidewalks.

“I am so grateful to live in this community, to know that I am surrounded by people who when faced with such horrible tragedy will only become stronger and move forward together, with hope and strength and love for our town,” said Serbun, in an email.
