Katharine Lee Bates
Bates was born in Falmouth but she was a Wellesley College English professor when she wrote the lyrics to the classic patriotic anthem in 1893.
The idea supposedly came to her during a trip to Colorado while she was awed by the vista atop Pike's Peak.
A statue honoring Katharine Lee Bates, author of "America the Beautiful," overlooks Main Street on the Falmouth town library lawn.
An elementary school in Wellesley is named after her.
