The author and poet was a member of the 1950 graduating class of Wellesley High School.
She was only 8 when she had her first poem published in the old Boston Herald in 1941.
The author of such works as "The Bell Jar" was a tortured soul even at a young age. She attempted suicide at 21 by ingesting several sleeping pills and crawling into the cellar. Police, neighbors, and even Boy Scouts scanned Wellesley to find her.
