Junior midfielder Ellie Landsman secured Lincoln-Sudbury’s spot in the Division 1 North field hockey quarterfinals with a goal in overtime, propelling the Warriors over host Danvers, 3-2, yesterday.

Danvers’s explosive offense sputtered late in the game, as the Warriors rebounded with a pair of goals from senior midfielder Annika Nygren in the second half to push the contest into overtime. Nygren delivered her first goal off a penalty stroke with 6:12 left.

“We have been practicing penalty strokes since Day 1 and it was crucial for her to put it in,’’ said coach Vicky Caburian. “It was a great feeling of confidence and that set the tone for the final minutes.’’

Trailing, 2-1, with 2:01 left, the Warriors were awarded a corner and Nygren, the team’s leading scorer (11 goals), drilled the tying goal.

The Warriors carried their momentum into overtime and took advantage of another corner. Senior captain Devon McCann set up Landsman, who fired a line drive from the top of the circle, 16 yards away.

“I knew it would be important to get offensive corners,’’ said Caburian. “If we could get the ball upfield and get a corner it was a just a matter of execution, and the team put together a textbook corner.’’

The Warriors’ defense, led by senior captains Jessica Lowe and Codi Quirk, was forced to adjust to Danvers’s attack after giving up early goals to Ashley Ataya and Sarah Potter.

“They took advantage of us in the beginning and we tried to trust our skills and stay mentally strong,’’ said Caburian.

“Our transition play was very good. We were very confident swinging the balls and getting nice runs down the wings and we tried to keep the ball away from Danvers.’’
