Westwood goalie Mollie Brown did not put together 50 great minutes in yesterday’s 16-15 victory over Wellesley in lacrosse, but after one particularly great moment, that didn’t matter.

The Wolverines led by a goal when, with just under four minutes left, one of Wellesley’s offensive aces lined up at the 8-meter arc to take a free-position shot.

To that point, Brown had been pulled twice and made just four saves, so as the play started, Brown readied herself.

“I was just thinking to myself, ‘Have to be big on this,’ ’’ Brown said. “Step to the ball, get down low, just try your hardest, and hope my team crashes.’’

Brown made the save and shot it to a defender on the clear, who carried it out of danger. Senior midfielder Misha Beatty scored an insurance goal on the ensuing possession.

Wellesley’s Maggie Dore scored off a free-position shot with a little more than a minute left, but the Wolverines (20-0) held on to become the only undefeated girls’ team in the MIAA this season.

“I’m really proud of our team, everybody really pulled through today,’’ Beatty said. “Even though this game was really close, I really admire our team for coming back like we did.’’

The Raiders (16-1) got off to a strong start, scoring five times in the first eight minutes. Trailing, 6-2, Westwood surged back to tie the score 6-6 with a little more than six minutes to play in the first half.

The teams then traded leads five times, going nearly goal for goal.

Westwood coach Leslie Frank said her team prevailed because they remained level-headed.

“They understood the level of the opponent, the level of the defense, and they rose to that,’’ she said.

Beatty led the Wolverines with six goals and an assist. Blake Dietrick paced the Raiders with eight goals and an assist.
