The Sutherland Pipe Band was organized in April 1936, making them one of the oldest pipe bands in the country. The Sutherland's goals are to present music of the highest caliber to the public and to achieve the highest competitive standards. The Sutherland Pipe Band is always happy to enroll new members, either pipers or drummers, who share the same goals as the band. The environment is friendly, instructive, and dedicated to promoting the music of the Great Highland Bagpipes. Band practices are held every Thursday at the Parish of the Messiah in Auburndale.

The Boston Artists Ensemble, founded in 1980, brings chamber music right to where you live. Founded by BSO cellist Jonathan Miller, the BAE cut its teeth playing weekly live chamber performances aired nationally on WGBH radio. These internationally recognized musicians return to Trinity Church in Newton Center; also playing each program at Salem's Peabody-Essex Museum. Each year they present five programs of chamber music. The New Philharmonia Orchestra of Massachusetts, founded in 1995, is a 75 member non-professional regional orchestra based in Newton and presenting performances in Newton and nearby communities under the motto "Music for All". Its music director is Ronald Knudsen, a Boston Symphony violinist with a distinguished reputation as a performer, conductor and educator. The orchestra advances its mission by presenting programs of classical music for the enjoyment of audiences of all ages and experiences from a variety of urban and suburban communities. At the same time the orchestra strives to provide its non-professional players the opportunity to achieve a high level of ensemble performance not otherwise available. The New Philharmonia orchestra offers a full season of concerts at the First Baptist Church in Newton Centre, and frequent children's concerts and other events at the Newton Cultural Center, where the orchestra is in residence.

Since 1983, Highland Jazz has presented nearly 200 concerts spanning the range of mainstream acoustic jazz, including classic standards, Bebop, Swing, Latin and Dixieland. As a non-profit organization, their goal is to make jazz enjoyable -- and affordable -- for everyone.
Each concert is a special event, based on themes that highlight the music of a particular composer, jazz style or instrument. Highland Jazz has been an early showcase for musicians who have gone on to national and international acclaim, including vocalist Rebecca Paris, pianist Makoto Ozone and guitarist Gray Sargent.

The Publick remains one of Boston's oldest resident companies, committed to classical roots and to exploring contemporary works- now in both indoor and outdoor theater settings. In 1971 The Publick Theatre's founder and first Artistic Director, Donato Colucci approached the MDC (now the Department of Conservation and Recreation) to support the creation of a classical outdoor theatre in Brighton's Christian Herter Park, emulating New York's Shakespeare Festival in Central Park. The small company that grew from their grassroots effort became The Publick Theatre. The theatre has expanded its repertory, including contemporary plays and also ventured indoors for the first time in more than three decades, performing Noel Coward's "Design for Living" at the Boston Center for the Arts.

Established in 1980, Turtle Lane Playhouse is a professional, non-profit theatre, presenting up to five fully-staged musical productions per year. The West Newton Cinema presents the finest foreign, independent and critically acclaimed films. The theatre was built in 1937 by a successful businessman and real estate developer Ben Rockman who lived in Newton Centre. The original theatre featured an eleven-hundred seat auditorium including a balcony, a ladies' lounge and a mens' smoking room. The design combined elements of art deco and streamlined modern.

The Wyner Center of the American Jewish Historical Society at Hebrew College in Newton, functions as the New England regional headquarters of AJHS, the nation's oldest historical organizations. The Society facility serves as the archival repository for the documentary record of Jewish life in the greater Boston area, and the home of the reference library of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Boston. The Society's extensive holdings include personal papers, organizational record, photographs, reports and other materials for researching the history of the Jewish community of Boston. The Society's Blumenthal Reading Room is located on the first level of the Gann Library of Hebrew College.
