Cabot Elementary School
Cabot Elementary School is one of 15 public elementaries in Newton. It draws its more than 400 students primarily from the Newtonville neighborhood. After 5th grade, Cabot students go to either to Bigelow Middle School or Day Middle School, and then to Newton North High School. In 2007, Newton school officials named Cabot as one of the three schools most in need of renovation or expansion. Cabot was completed in 1929, with an addition in 1957, and the 41,000-square-foot building has not had a major renovation since. A temporary "modular" addition was added in the 1990s. A consultant's report noted that Cabot has no cafeteria or auditorium, most classrooms are small, and it has the lowest net square feet per pupil of any school. It estimated the school was overcrowded by 76 students. James Swaim was named interim principal at Cabot in 2008. He replaced Marilynne Quarcoo, who served the school for 18 years. Cabot is known for the stone statue of Humpty Dumpty that has guarded its front steps since the building opened. Humpty Dumpty is the school mascot. The school's newspaper, the Jabberwocky, takes its name from Lewis Carroll's poem of the same name.
