Franklin School is one of the 15 public elementaries in Newton. Its slightly more than 400 students come mostly from the West Newton neighborhood.

After 5th grade, Franklin students go to Day Middle School and then to Newton North High School.

Franklin was originally built in 1939, with additions in 1950 and 1953. The three-story red brick building has 57,000 square feet of space. Franklin classrooms are on the small side compared to Newton elementaries as a whole.

A study of school space needs done for the Newton School Committee in 2007 found Franklin is overcrowded by 48 students, and projected enrollment growth of 93 students in the next five years. That would put Franklin's total enrollment over the 500-student cap set by the School Committee for elementary schools.

In 2008 the school's playground received a $70,000 renovation, including new play structures, thanks to fundraising by the Franklin School PTO.
