Memorial-Spaulding is physically the largest of Newton's 15 elementary schools, and had the second-largest student body. Only Countryside has more students. Memorial Spaulding serves about 450 students from southeast Newton, including the Oak Hill and Oak Hill Park neighborhoods.

After 5th grade, Memorial-Spaulding students go to Oak Hill Middle School and then to Newton South High School.

Memorial-Spaulding was finished in 1954. Additions in 1959 and 2002 brought it to its current size, 69,000 square feet. The most recent renovation added 4 classrooms, a new library, a special education classroom and five tutorial spaces. Because of this relatively recent overhaul, officials consider Memorial-Spaulding among the elementary schools in the best physical shape.

According a 2007 report by a School Committee consultant Memorial-Spaulding is currently at capacity, and faces a five-year projected enrollment increase of 86 students.
