Schools in Newton

Newton is a city where education matters, and its public schools have long been recognized as among the best in the nation. It is also home to numerous private and religious prep schools, and six colleges, the largest of which is Boston College, with an enrollment of nearly 15,000 graduate and undergraduate students.

Newton is among the Massachusetts communites with the highest percentage of college graduates. Some 72% of residents over the age of 25 have a college degree, and 40% have a graduate or professional degree, according to the Census Bureau.

Community education

  • Newton Community Education is a self-sustaining arm of the Newton Public Schools, open to all students, regardless of residence. It provides educational, social, cultural, and vocational programs to children and adults.

Private schools

  • Brimmer and May School, an independent, co-educational day school for pre-K to grade 12, located in Chestnut Hill.
  • Chestnut Hill School, a private day school for boys and girls from pre-K to grade 6, located in Chestnut Hill.
  • Fessenden School, a private day and boarding school for boys in grades K-9, located in West Newton.
  • Jackson School, a private, co-educational Catholic elementary school, serving grades K-6, located in Newton Corner.
  • Newton Montessori School?, an independent, co-educational Montessori school offering for pre-K to grade 6, located in Newton Centre.
  • The Rashi School?, a Reform Jewish day school serving grades K-8, located in Newton Corner.
  • Walnut Park Montessori School, a co-educational Catholic preschool and kindergarten that serves as a feeder for the Jackson School, located on the same property.

Colleges and universities

  • Andover Newton Theological School? is the oldest graduate school of theology in the US. It was established in 1807 in Andover, and moved to its Newton Centre campus in 1931.
  • Boston College? is one of the oldest and largest Jesuit, Catholic universities in the country, and one of the nation's top academic institutions. It has nearly 15,000 students, including nearly 10,000 undergraduates. Most of its campus is located in Newton's Chestnut Hill neighborhood, but in recent decades it has expanded into the nearby Boston neighborhood of Brighton.
  • Hebrew College? is a college of Jewish studies founded in 1921 and located in Newton Centre.
  • Lasell College?, a private college with about 1,200 students, is located on a 50-acre campus in Auburndale.
  • Mount Ida College is a private, four-year liberal arts college with 1,500 students. Its 70-acre campus is in the Oak Hill neighborhood.
  • Pine Manor Colege, a private, liberal arts college for women, offers two- and four-year programs. Its campus in Chestnut Hill serves a student body of 500.
