Underwood Elementary School
Underwood School is one of the 15 public elementaries in Newton. Its nearly 300 students come primarily from the Newton Corner neighborhood. After 5th grade, Underwood students go to Bigelow Middle School, which is a block away on Vernon Street, and then to Newton North High School. Underwood was built in 1924 and is the second oldest of Newton's school buildings, after Angier Elementary. The building has been altered very little over the years, in part because it sits on a one-acre lot, smallest of all the schools, and thus there is little room for expansion. It has 15 classrooms. A 2007 study of school space needs rated Underwood as slightly overcrowded, but that may soon get worse. A projection of enrollment done for the study predicts Underwood will have 103 more students at the end of five years, an increase of more than 30 percent.
