Williams Elementary School
Williams Elementary School is one of 15 public elementaries in Newton. It serves Newton Lower Falls and a portion of Auburndale. After 5th grade, Angier students attend Brown Middle School for grades 6-8 and then Newton South High School. Williams is the second smallest of Newton's schools. It has 13 regular classrooms and 31,000 square feet of space. Only Zervas Elementary is smaller. The light-colored brick building with Art Deco-style stone detailing around the entrance was built in 1949-50. By 2000 overcrowding had become a severe problem and it was extensively renovated in 2001. Three classrooms were added over the existing kindergarten wing, a new art room and library were added, and the auditorium was enlarged. Because of this relatively recent overhaul, officials consider Williams among the elementary schools in the best physical shape. Williams shares the title of most-diverse of Newton's schools with Lincoln-Eliot. In 2007-8 its student body was 59% white, 22% Asian, 7% Hispanic, and 6% African American.
