“Getting sauced is for cranberries!” is just one of several messages drivers may encounter in Maine during the busy Thanksgiving travel stretch.

The Maine Department of Transportation posted a number of Thanksgiving-themed signs throughout the state as a way to celebrate the holiday and encourage safe driving practices, a dispatcher for the department confirmed Wednesday.

Some of the slogans were developed by the public in a “contest-like atmosphere” where residents submitted entries, and MaineDOT staff selected the best ones, the dispatcher said. Others were created in-house.

The department first decided to put a twist on the advisories this past spring, and the public seems to be enjoying them, according to the dispatcher.

Closer to home, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation does not plan on posting any similar signage because the “Federal Highway Administration isn’t a huge fan” of the signs, a MassDOT dispatcher said Wednesday. (Sorry, “Use yah blinkah” fans.)
