Q. When I recently had the brake pads replaced in my car, the mechanic used ceramic pads. The mechanic didn’t say why he wanted to use the ceramic pads, just that they are better. There was an extra charge for these pads, too. Was this just an upcharge to get me to run up my bill, or is there a real benefit?
A. I get a bit frustrated when shop owners don’t explain why they do certain work. To me, it’s as important as doing the repair. I’ve used ceramic brake pads in my cars, and the two key benefits are the lack of brake dust and the quieter overall operation. Ceramic brake pads are more expensive, but I do think the benefits are worth the extra cost.
