2017 Audi A4

Redesigned for 2017, Audi’s sleek A4 compact sedan offers outsized style and performance. The car gets a new body, transmission, and more fuel-efficient drivetrain.

The five-passenger sedan comes with a turbocharged, 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine that puts out 252 horsepower. In addition, Audi is offering a new, more fuel-efficient drivetrain for 2017: the 190-horsepower, 2.0-liter, four-cylinder A4 ultra. Audi’s new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission is standard, and a six-speed manual transmission with Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive system is available.

The A4 is available in three trims: premium, premium plus, and prestige. Leather upholstery and a sunroof are standard. The sedan is available with Audi’s driver-focused virtual cockpit with a 12.3-inch display and the easy-to-use MMI infotainment interface that controls music, maps, and menus.

The car earned top scores in crash tests performed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and a five-star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Audi’s standard pre sense safety system includes forward collision warning and pedestrian detection. Upper trims come with a rearview camera and front and rear parking sensors.

Starting at $34,900, the A4 ultra delivers an excellent 27 miles to the gallon around town and 37 on the highway. The A4’s premium base trim achieves 25 mpg in the city and 33 on the highway. It starts at $37,300.

What the experts are saying

Fresh technology

“It does all the things we love about Audis. It’s solid and it handles with sure-footed precision, but now it’s got the state of the art technology. From adjustable suspension settings to lane keeping driver assistance packages, the A4 comes with things that you usually only see in the largest luxury sedans. The A4, our bestselling sedan, is very popular if you live in or commute to the city because parking is easy with a great turning radius and rearview camera.” –Gabe Despres, general manager at Audi Brookline

A safety standout

“The 2017 Audi A4 earns good ratings across the board for protecting people when crashes happen. The redesign improves the A4’s small overlap crash test performance from poor to good. The A4 is also a top performer for preventing crashes in the first place. Buyers get a forward collision warning and automatic braking system as standard equipment.  With most vehicles, this kind of important safety feature is still usually optional.  Automakers have pledged to make automatic braking standard on virtually all vehicles by 2022 so Audi is ahead of the game. For buyers looking for a midsize luxury car with the highest safety performance, the A4 should be at the top of their shopping list.” –Russ Rader, senior vice president of communications at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety

Meeting the competition

“Audi keeps turning up the A4’s capabilities in the areas of steering feel, throttle response, ride quality, and handling. Every car in the entry-luxury category is extremely well executed in all of these areas, making it impossible for one model to substantially out-perform another. The new A4 brings everything together as well or better than anything in the segment, and adds a beautiful cabin, effective ergonomics and attractive exterior styling. Relative to its competitors, the A4 has never been better at offering a viable, and arguably superior, alternative to the segment icons from BMW and Mercedes-Benz.” –Karl Brauer, executive publisher, Autotrader & Kelley Blue Book
