Top 10 best cars for commuting

Total Car Score has identified the Top 10 Cars for Commuting based on their excellent fuel-efficiency ratings in both highway city driving conditions.

“The mixed mpg rating, which represents the overall fuel efficiency of a vehicle, is usually closer to the city mpg than the highway number,’’ said Karl Brauer, editor of Total Car Score.

This list includes hybrids and pure electric cars, plus diesel- and gasoline-powered vehicles.

1. Nissan Leaf (electric)

City miles per gallon: 106

This car used a lithium-ion battery to get the equivalent of 106 miles per gallon without any emissions. Its top speed is about 90 miles per hour.

2. Toyota Camry Hybrid

City miles per gallon: 32

This Camry has a 2.5 liter four-cylinder engine. It can be driven with EV and ECO modes.

3. Ford Fusion Hybrid

City miles per gallon: 41

Standard features in this car include a 2.0 liter hybrid electric powertrain, regenerative braking system, and environmentally conscious seating.

4. Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

City miles per gallon: 35

The Sonata Hybrid has Hyundai’s Blue Drive fully parallel hybrid system with a lithium polymer battery.

5. Lexus RX Hybrid

City miles per gallon: 32

This car is available in four-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive options. It is a certified Super Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle.

6. Volkswagen Passat (diesel)

City miles per gallon: 31

The Passat is Volkswagen’s most efficient diesel vehicle, narrowly beating out the Golf, Jetta SportWagen, and Jetta.

7. Audi A3 (diesel)

City miles per gallon: 30

The A3 comes with Audi’s S tronic dual-clutch transmission, quattro all-wheel drive, and a clean diesel engine.

8. Volkswagen Golf (diesel)

City miles per gallon: 30

This Golf can travel up to 609 miles per tank, according to Volkswagen.

9. Chevrolet Sonic

City miles per gallon: 29

The Sonic sedan and hatchback have both received a five-star overall score for safety from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administrations’ New Car Assessment Program.

10. Ford Fiesta

City miles per gallon: 29

The Fiesta has a 1.6 liter Ti-VCT Duratec 1-4 engine and available dual dry-clutch PowerShift six-speed automatic transmission.
