According to research provided to Boston.com by industry analyst IHS Automotive, Japanese cars are the most popular among Massachusetts motorists, with Toyota and Honda leading the charge.
IHS Automotive looked at the 15 most popular vehicles in the Bay State based on new vehicle registrations in the 2015 calendar year. According to the company’s findings, four Toyota vehicles amassed 42,813 new vehicle registrations in 2015. Not far behind, three Honda vehicles accrued 34,229 registrations last year.
The Ford F Series (including the F-150 and F-250, but not the heavier F-350) was the most popular American vehicle brand in Massachusetts with 11,140 vehicles registered last year. The Ford Escape, the only other Ford vehicle on IHS Automotive’s list, was less popular with Bay State residents with only 5,898 registrations.
Out of the top 15 vehicles, more than half were SUVs, CUVs and pickup trucks. The increased interest in these larger vehicles may have been due to last year’s lower gas prices and improvements in the job market.
