Boston newcomers: What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned moving to the city?

As a newcomer to Boston, it’s impossible to know all you’re getting into when you move to a city with as many idiosyncrasies as Boston.
Earlier this year, we heard from readers about the highs and lows of living in Boston. Readers shared their frustrations with the city’s confusing roads and their struggles to make friends as well as their love of the culture and history.
A common sentiment in the responses of new arrivals to the city is the surprise at just how much they didn’t know before they got here. There’s nothing like braving your first New England winter or busy rotary to teach you what it’s really like to be a Bostonian.
Native Bostonian Kara Baskin put together a guide for readers on how to fit in, including advice on the five L.L.Bean jackets you’ll need, where to shop with no frills, and how to navigate the world with quintessential cynicism. The guide also calls to mind some of the early mistakes newcomers make as they learn to love the city.
We want to know what was the most shocking thing you learned about Boston as a new resident. Tell us what about the learning curve was most surprising to you by filling out the survey below or e-mailing us at [email protected] and we may feature your response in a future article.
