This Newton oncologist is running for those receiving treatment for breast cancer

In our “Why I’m Running” series, Boston Marathon runners share what’s inspiring them to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston. If you’re running the marathon, you can share your story here.

From: Newton

I am thrilled that on April 18, I will run my ninth consecutive Boston Marathon.

I am honored to run this year in support of the Ellie Fund, a non-profit organization that provides essential support for those receiving treatment for breast cancer in Massachusetts.

I am a breast oncologist at the Mass General Cancer Center. For those individuals facing a diagnosis of breast cancer, the past two years have led to an unprecedented need for support to help navigate these unchartered waters. In Massachusetts this year, more than 7,000 individuals will be diagnosed with breast cancer.

The mission of the Ellie Fund is to provide support to these individuals when they need it most. The Ellie Fund provides essential support services to individuals with breast cancer, in order to ease the stresses of everyday life, allowing the focus to be on family, recovery, and healing. Services include: providing transportation to medical appointments, nutritional and grocery assistance, childcare reimbursement, nutritious prepared/delivered meals, and integrative therapy services.

I am incredibly grateful to the Ellie Fund for providing assistance to many of my own patients during their treatment. Funds raised from Boston 2022 will provide ongoing support for this important mission. I am grateful for my own health and the ability to run Boston each year to support causes that are important to me.

One of my favorite race mantras is from former Boston Marathon winner Amby Burfoot who notes, “Every mile out there is a gift and every finish line is a gift.”
