International Picnic Day is approaching, and families and friends may be getting together to eat outdoors on June 18. And why not? Dining out in a beautiful park is a great, pandemic safe way to kick off the summer.

While people all over the world go on picnics regularly, it’s been said that picnics as we know them came from the French Revolution, which led to royal parks being open to the public for the first time. On International Picnic Day, you can pack a basket full of sandwiches, a few refreshing drinks, and a tablecloth to lay out on the grass, and celebrate the holiday.

Boston Common and the Rose Kennedy Greenway are great locations to enjoy a picnic outdoors, as is the Arnold Arboretum. In Watertown, Arsenal Yards is hosting Picnic in the Park this summer, a monthly outdoor event series featuring live local bands and entertainment, like magician and comedian Peter Gross and indie rock group Fish House. But we know readers have more than a few ideas for where to best enjoy a picnic outdoors during the summer months.
