2021 was a big comeback year for movies.

Theaters reopened prompting some readers to return to watching on the big screen, while many others enjoyed catching new movie releases at home.

From theaters, living rooms, laptops, and phones, we had a lot on our watchlist this year. Blockbusters arrived like ‘Spiderman: No Way Home,’ ‘Shang-Chi,’ and ‘F9.’ Viewers even left the house for the long awaited ‘Space Jam: A New Legacy.‘ We caught glimpses of Boston streets in ‘Free Guy,’ ‘Tender Bar,’ and the star-studded dark comedy ‘Don’t Look Up‘ — one of the most talked about films of the year.

Musicals danced their way onto the screen in 2021 with ‘In the Heights‘ and ‘Tick, Tick… Boom!,’ both from Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Maranda, as well as the Steven Spielberg’s remake of ‘West Side Story.

With awards season coming up, biopics will get a close look from critics. Films such as Kristen Stewart’s performance as Princess Diana of Whales in ‘Spencer,’ ‘House of Gucci‘ starring Lady Gaga, and Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem performances in ‘Being The Ricardos.

Dramas like ‘The Power of the Dog‘ starring Benedict Cumberbatch are getting Oscar buzz, but even Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut ‘The Lost Daughter‘ features a masterful performance from Olivia Colman.
