The Winter Olympics are back on for the first time since the start of the pandemic, and as with the Summer Games in Tokyo, the games aren’t without controversy.

China is hosting the games this year, which already started with a few sports on Wednesday, officially kick off after the opening ceremony on Friday, and will continue through Feb. 20. The games are the first pandemic era Winter Olympics and restrictions are in place to limit the spread of the virus as several athletes, including former Bruins center David Krejci, are testing positive.

This year’s competition features 15 sports including skiing, curling, hockey, and figure skating — the most popular event nationwide. Here in Massachusetts, those tuning into the Olympics will likely be watching alpine skiing events, according to Google Trends data from previous games.

The 2018 Winter Olympics has been the least viewed games on record until the Tokyo summer games became the least-watched Olympics of either season. There’s some concern that this year will follow a similar trend with fewer fans tuning in.

In addition to the falling ratings for the competition, this year’s games have been overshadowed by calls for a boycott from activists and human rights groups alleging China’s abuse of the Muslim Uyghur population. Amnesty International warned against Chinese authorities using the games as a “sports-washing opportunity.”

China has also come under criticism for its censorship of Chinese tennis champion Peng Shuai, who disappeared from public view after she accused a senior government official of sexual assault.

While the U.S. will not send any diplomats to represent the nation in protest over the alleged abuses, American athletes are still participating, and if past games are any indication, they’ll be taking home some medals.
