The Celebrity Series of Boston will unleash 60 pianos upon the city of Boston come September 23. The organization first launched Street Pianos in 2013, combining public music with local art, by selecting artists from all over Boston to paint unique designs on the instruments. Now, the organizers of Street Pianos have selected 60 artists to bring life and color to the new set of pianos this fall.
According to a release, 19 of the 60 artists are returning from 2013, and not all are painters—some plan to bring elements of sculpture, quilting, woodblock printing, and even robotics. The pianos are being crafted at the Innovation and Design Building in Boston, with an expected completion date of August 26. The design is completely up to the interpretation of each artist, with the only constant being that they will all say, “Play Me, I’m Yours.”
The pianos will hit the public spaces of Boston neighborhoods from September 23 to August 10. British artist Luke Jerram, the creator of the Street Pianos concept, will be in Boston from September 20 to 24 to help launch the installation.
