MIT announced Thursday morning that Cambridge native/enormous movie star Matt Damon will be the school’s 2016 guest commencement speaker.
Damon’s claim to fame, of course, was his role as a brilliant MIT janitor in a little ol’ film called Good Will Hunting that he made with his buddy Ben Affleck back in 1997.
Fast forward to today, and Matt Damon’s an Academy Award winner, star of multiple film franchises, filmmaker, and environmental activist who was just nominated for his sixth Golden Globe this morning.
“I am thrilled that Mr. Damon will be with us at Commencement,’’ MIT President L. Rafael Reif said in a statement to MIT News. “Through his art, this son of Cambridge has made us think about our world in new ways, and through his service, he has made it a better place.’’
Damon joins a long list of notable MIT commencement speakers, including U.S. Chief Technology Officer Megan Smith in 2015, DuPont CEO Ellen Kullman in 2014, and Dropbox co-founder and CEO Drew Houston in 2013.
MIT’s 2016 commencement takes place Friday, June 3 at 10 a.m.
