Take a collective sigh of relief, Bostonians. Ben Affleck says his giant back tattoo is fake.

Fans of the Cambridge-raised actor have been scratching their heads since early December when a photo of Affleck on the set of his new movie, Live By Night, showed a massive phoenix tattoo covering most of his back. Though many clung to the hope that it was fake, TMZ and People.com both reported that it was the real deal.

Despite the fact that exes Jennifer Garner and Jennifer Lopez chimed in with their less-than-flattering thoughts about his inked back, Ben Affleck confirmed in a press interview with Extra that the tattoo was “fake for a movie.’’

“I actually do have a number of tattoos,’’ Affleck said. “But I try to have them in places where you don’t have to do a lot of cover-up … they get sort of addictive, tattoos, after a while.’’
