Mindy Kaling shares a bizarre, sexist question she received about ‘Ocean’s 8’

The Cambridge native joked with Seth Meyers about the mindset of an interviewer she recently encountered.

Cambridge native Mindy Kaling stopped by “Late Night with Seth Meyers” Thursday to talk about her upcoming film, “Ocean’s 8,” and discussed an utterly strange question she recently received from an interviewer while promoting the film.

Kaling said that she was doing an interview with fellow “Ocean’s 8” stars Anne Hathaway and Sarah Paulson, and the male interviewer keyed in on Kaling’s character’s special talent for jewelry.

“In the movie, [Hathaway] plays an actress, and Sarah Paulson, she’s a party promoter in it,” Kaling said. “And then with me, he was like, ‘Mindy, you play a jeweler. Now, you’re not married and have never been engaged, so how do you know about diamonds?'”

Kaling continued to sarcastically riff on the interviewer’s question, marveling that she, “a famous spinster,” could still play a jewelry expert despite the fact that she’s “never been anywhere near a diamond before.”

Meyers joined in roasting the nameless interviewer, as well.

“It also seems to be that he has a fundamental misunderstanding of acting,” Meyers said. “Because you could have said, ‘Oh, by the way, none of us have robbed a museum.'”

“Ocean’s 8,” which also features a cameo by Matt Damon in the same role he has played in the other “Ocean’s” movies, hits theaters June 8.
